The 2018 SUPPORT Act would be renewed after missing a September deadline.
The Senate Health Committee has scheduled a meeting to consider the reauthorization of the SUPPORT Act, legislation introduced in 2018 to provide funding for opioid addiction treatments. Congress missed the deadline to renew the legislation in September.
Over 300 advocacy groups have urged Congress to renew the legislation since its expiration, but legislators have not yet done so. Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, also advocated for the bill’s renewal and is pleased to see some action being taken.
“Thousands of Americans are dying each month from opioid and drug overdoses. Reauthorizing the SUPPORT Act is crucial to better address the opioid epidemic. Glad to see the Committee taking up this important legislation,” Senator Cassidy stated last Tuesday.
